OC & Selective Explained

Everything you need to know about NSW's Opportunity Class and Selective High School programs — test format, key dates, school listings, and how placement works.

What is an Opportunity Class?

Opportunity Classes (OC) are specialist classes within NSW public primary schools for high potential and intellectually gifted students in Years 5 and 6. It's a 2-year program. Parents apply when their child is in Year 4 for placement the following year.

Students leave their current school to attend a school with an OC. You can apply for any OC school — it doesn't have to be in your area. Aurora College provides online OC for rural/remote students.

What if you don't get in?

Reserve list: You may be placed on a reserve list (bands A-F). If others decline, you may receive a later offer — up to end of Term 1.

Every NSW school supports gifted students. Department policy requires all schools to provide curriculum differentiation, extension, and enrichment.

OC is not a prerequisite for Selective. The tests are completely separate. Many successful selective students never attended OC.

Reapply later: For selective high school, you can apply for Years 8-11 entry directly through individual schools.

Tips for Parents

🧠
Don't over-coach

The test assesses reasoning, not memorised knowledge. A child who gets in with coaching would likely have got in anyway.

💻
Use the free practice tests

The NSW Department of Education provides free online practice tests that simulate the real test environment.

📅
Apply early, refine later

Submit your application early. You can change school preferences up until 5 June 2026.

🏫
Consider partially selective

Less competitive than fully selective but still provide excellent selective stream education.

💬
Talk to your child

Consider their personality, not just academic ability. Make sure they actually want to go.

🎯
OC is not a prerequisite

Not getting into OC does not affect selective chances. The tests are completely separate.
